Issue 03 / 2016

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hamburg is Germany’s gateway to the world. We have been welcoming visitors from all over the world for centuries: foreign business people, skilled workers, tourists and foreign patients. They all feel at ease in our open-minded and cosmopolitan city with its wide range of tourist attractions, excellent hotels, doctors and hospitals of global renown and ultra-modern rehabilitation facilities.

One proof of our close ties to other countries are Hamburg’s representative offices in many of the world’s leading cities, including Dubai and St. Petersburg. They are the first port of call for anyone in our partner countries wishing to learn more about our city and the developments in our economy: about our excellent expertise in the healthcare sector, our aviation industry that ranks third in the world after Seattle and Toulouse; our international port, logistics and foreign trade sector and many other industries that account for Hamburg’s economic power.

In January 2017 Hamburg will boast a further attraction: our new concert hall, the Elbphilharmonie, is a work of art where outstanding architecture will be combined with wonderful music. Whether you come as a tourist or a patient, we look forward to welcoming you to Hamburg, Germany’s green metropolis!

Yours, Prof Hansjörg Schmidt-Trenz

President and Chief Executive Officer, Hamburg Chamber of Commerce

NEWS
Hamburg at the Oman Health 2016

The sixth Oman Health Exhibition and Conference was held in Muscat from 20 to 22 September 2016. At this year’s specialist medical and healthcare trade fair, representatives of the Hamburg Tourist Board and the Asklepios hospital group once again presented the excellent range of medical services on offer in Hamburg. Alongside Anja Held (International Patient Office Asklepios) and Dr Monika Rulle (Hamburg Tourist Board), Hamburg was also represented in the GCC region by Kirsten Staab (Director Hamburg Representative Office UAE and Healthcare Industry Service Center, Dubai) and by Hamburg medical consultant Dr Younis Albalooshi from Dubai. This impressive line-up of professionals talked to and answered the questions posed by interested visitors, and informed a large number of patients and healthcare representatives about the broad range of services offered by their Hamburg partners.

Hamburg welcomes delegation from Kobe, Japan

An eleven-strong political delegation from the Japanese city of Kobe visited Hamburg in order to talk to representatives about German-Japanese relations and Hamburg’s cluster policy. The subject of health tourism was also on the agenda. Together with Leona Hitomi from the Hamburg Business Development Corporation and Hamburg Tourist Board project manager Monika Rulle, the guests shared their experiences and talked about the success factors and obstacles in this area of the economy. Located in central Japan, Kobe has roughly the same population as Hamburg and is committed to international health tourism as part of a nationwide Japanese strategy.

Albertinen-Krankenhaus: 25 years of top-level cardiovascular medicine

Over the past 25 years, 140,000 patients have been treated at the Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre, which is one of Germany’s leading centres of cardiovascular medicine. The anniversary was celebrated in the form of a symposium with numerous guests, at which the welcome address was given on behalf of the Hamburg Senate by Ms Elke Badde, state secretary at the Hamburg Ministry for Health and Consumer Protection. The Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre specializes in particularly gentle techniques that benefit not only older patients and those suffering from serious secondary diseases: for example, beating heart bypass surgery using solely arterial vessels, minimally-invasive valve surgery without open heart surgery and without heart-lung machine (TAVI, MitraClip), treatment of cardiac insufficiency and cardiac arrhythmia by means of cardiac catheter. The Centre also boasts a high level of expertise in the treatment of aortic aneurysms and dissections. The in-house “Albertinen International Patient Service” is also available to support patients during their stay at this hospital.

Schön Klinik Hamburg Eilbek: specialists for shoulder disorders

The shoulder is the body’s most flexible joint, which is why constant or recurrent shoulder pain can prove a considerable impediment in everyday routines, thereby lowering one’s quality of life. If the joint has become so worn that conservative therapies do not result in any significant improvement to the symptoms, surgery tends to be unavoidable. An interdisciplinary team of specialists at Schön Klinik Hamburg Eilbek provides the entire spectrum of shoulder disorder treatments – from diagnostics and conservative measures such as infiltrations and physiotherapy to arthroscopic surgery and operations designed to reconstruct or replace the joint. Shoulder replacement surgery in particular has developed enormously in recent years. “By using prostheses selected to suit the specific patient, we can tailor the joint replacement to the patient’s individual needs”, explains Dr Niels Hellmers, senior physician and head of the shoulder department at the Centre of Orthopaedics and Endoprosthetics. Minimally-invasive surgical techniques help patients recover quickly when an operation is necessary. “Every year, we treat a total of 200-300 patients with shoulder problems, and the numbers are rising. Our declared goal is to provide long-term pain relief and to improve the shoulder’s mobility. A comprehensive range of quality measurements helps us to constantly improve treatment outcomes for our patients”, explains Professor Frank Lampe, chief physician at the Centre of Orthopaedics and Endoprosthetics.

Using endoscopes to track down cancer: Latest-generation instruments manufactured in Hamburg

Oncology is becoming ever more precise and ever more successful. It is not only new drugs that are playing a key role in this, but also and above all new diagnostic methods. With its innovative endoscopes, the medical technology company Olympus in Hamburg is making a crucial contribution when it comes to visually detecting mutated cells in the human body. Based on the trend towards increasingly high resolution TVs and cameras, the company is now making endoscopic systems that generate Ultra HD images with a resolution of 4K – that is to say 4,000 horizontal pixels. To achieve this high resolution, Olympus has developed special lenses consisting of a new glass material. The more precise images not only help tumours to be identified but also aid surgeons in more clearly recognizing organ tissue during surgery and in removing tumours more easily.

LifeTime: your health data in an app

Hamburg-based start-up connected-health.eu brought out a new solution in 2016 that enables health data to be shared digitally between doctor and patient – even without an Internet connection. Thanks to the LifeTime app, patients can use their smartphones to store and manage their medical documents, such as X-ray images and letters from their doctor. The LifeTime Hub, a small box situated in the doctor’s surgery, ensures that data are transmitted directly between the doctor’s computer and the patient’s smartphone in a way that is secure and meets data protection requirements. The app is the brainchild of Dr Johannes Jacubeit, a Hamburg doctor and connected-health.eu CEO who was recently named “Innovator under 35” by the MIT. As a doctor, he was amazed on a daily basis by the outdated IT world he and his colleagues had to battle with, and repeatedly wished that modern digital communication systems were used in the healthcare sector. “As well as saving surgery staff time and money, the app is a great way of offering patients a very special service. After all, more and more patients who are seeking medical advice want to have full control over their own medical documents so that they have them at their disposal at any time on their smartphones in the event of an emergency”, explains Dr Jacubeit.

Elbphilharmonie: grand opening in January 2017

When the Elbphilharmonie concert hall opens on 11 and 12 January 2017, there will be yet another new and unique reason to visit Hamburg. Located in the HafenCity, which is nestled between the Speicherstadt (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the port, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with its striking architecture symbolizes the diverse and maritime flair of this port city. Above Kaispeicher A, a warehouse formerly used to store tea, tobacco and cocoa, the glass facade soars 110 metres up into the sky, a new landmark to attract Hamburg residents and visitors alike. There are three concert halls that will offer a broad-ranging programme of music, a large music teaching section and a public plaza 37 metres above the ground that gives visitors a spectacular view across the city and will already open on 5 November 2016. Ticket sales for the individual concerts began in June 2016.

Ten years of Emirates and HSV: airline unveils “HSV Jet” as thank you for partnership

International airline Emirates and Hamburg football club HSV have been partners ever since 2006. The team’s strip sponsor has now expressed its thanks to the Bundesliga team in the form of a very special gift: to mark the tenth anniversary of the partnership, the “HSV Jet” was unveiled at Hamburg Airport. Six HSV players adorn the Boeing 777-300ER, among them Lewis Holtby and Pierre-Michel Lasogga. The football club’s logo is emblazoned on both sides of the aircraft’s front section. “This is our way of celebrating our HSV sponsorship and our commitment to the city of Hamburg and its airport”, said Emirates boss Volker Greiner. The Boeing flies to over 100 worldwide destinations in the airline’s route network – from Hamburg via Tokyo to Brisbane. The airline, which is headquartered in Dubai, plans over the next few years to run other campaigns in a bid to convey its passion for football to as many countries as possible. This year Emirates is likewise celebrating the tenth anniversary of its Hamburg-Dubai route: twice a day, business travellers and holiday-makers can fly non-stop from the Hanseatic city to the Middle East.
